Mitt Romney’s Incorrect National Anthem Statistic

Mitt Romney claims that “we (Americans) are the only people on Earth that put our hand over our heart during the playing of the National Anthem.”  Mitt Romney seems to have the most innate talent to invent, propagate, and disseminate the most incredible, inaccurate, facts for the sole purpose to whip up the “Nut Jobs” he meets on the campaign trail.  Is the man really this dumb or does he just have no shame?  Help me out her folks.

Is it not enough that America be the best country on Earth, but her people have to be the only ones who love their own country enough to show reverence by being the only country to cover our heart during the National Anthem?

Allow me to pass on, as I have traveled to many countries in the world when I was a young man, and I can say from first had experience that many other countries also follow this tradition. Italy, Japan, and Venezuelaare just a few examples I can give as the list is much longer.

Now this being said, because of Mitt Romney’s inaccurate comment to the uneducated masses who are claiming their “Patriot Conservative Republicanism,” now think that only Americans of the U.S. put their hands over their hearts when they hear the National Anthem…..because they heard Mitt, Mitty, Mittens Romney say it was so.

It just befuddles me and even hurts my head trying to comprehend that “Ignorance and Stupidity” is reigning so supreme today in my Republican Party.

In a similar vein of thought, there is a photograph of President Obama walking across a stage, hands at his sides, while the few uniformed military personnel in the background have their hand over their heart. The story goes that President Obama did not cover his heart while the National Anthem was being played so it proved he wasn’t a true American. I know, awful isn’t it?

President Obama was actually walking to a podium after being introduced. The music playing was HAIL TO THE CHIEF, traditionally played when the President of the United States is introduced. And in this instance, the President is not expected to cover his own heart.

I’m not young, but it still amazes me the lengths some people will go to lie.

    Hello NON,
Yea I saw that too. The LIV are trying to grasp onto any straw and try to make it a negative for the President.

EOK- Been busy for awhile. The answer to your question, is that it was a lie, and not Romney being an idiot. Romney served on some Olympic panel when Salt Lake City hosted the event. It is almost certain that Romney was present during the opening ceremonies. This is when they play the Anthems for all the countries being represented. Romney most certainly witnessed many different countrymen placing their hands over their hearts.

    Hello J.O.B.
Good to know and I will dig deeper into this and get back.

  5. Engineer of Knowledge Says:

    Well J.O.B.
It seems that your source is incorrect and yes Mitt Romney DID in fact make that claim. I have posted the video clip of the event below.

I am thinking you are listening to the Damage Control aspects that is propagating the mistakes of Mitt as a lie. Try to obtain your source of making decisions to more than just a few. Now I am not saying to forgo your information you are sourcing today but may I suggest Randi Rhodes, Ed Schultz, or any of their kind and cross source.

So in conclusion you can see and hear for yourself when you are done reading this reply.

As one of my teachings in Masonry is, “Our time here on earth should be one of a self journey of enlightenment….and as we grow, educate, and seek illumination…..truths, facts, and logic will reveal themselves. No one needs to apologize for the corrections along the way.”

    Hello J.O.B.
The “Fact Checker” site is a good non-partisan source to check facts as I have found them to be very honest and truthful.

By the way…Glad to have you stop by again.

  7. J.O.B. Says:

“He gained broader fame by serving as president of the organizing committee for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.”

    Hear is a link:

I first heard the claim on the Bill Press Show. While researching it’s validity, I found numerous articles verifying the claim.

Even the link you provided verified it. “The first part of this statement is simply wrong. As Kaczynski noted, Romney ran the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics and surely should have noticed the many athletes with their hands on their hearts during the playing of their national anthems”.

Are you saying all these sources are wrong, including your own?
So Romney had nothing to do with the ’02 Olympics? You lost me Brother.

  8. Engineer of Knowledge Says:

You need to try the first link again and read more carefully.

The statement of, “The first part of this statement is simply wrong” is referring to Mitt’s statement, “Americans are the only people on Earth that put our hand over our heart during the playing of the National Anthem,” not that the claim was false. (Did you view the video clip?)

The piece then goes onto say that this was NOT the first time that Mitt made this statement because it is noted that the governor also said this at least once before during a stump speech in Iowa in December.

The site then goes on to discuss Mitt’s second statement that FDR had it implemented as a salute to honor of the blood that was being shed by our sons and daughters in far-off places. The flag code was codified into law during Roosevelt’s presidency but he appears to have had little to do with it. Certainly, the hand-over-heart salute was not done “in honor of the blood that was being shed by our sons and daughters in far of places,” as Romney put it.

It was Francis Bellamy, who wrote the pledge in 1892, had included instructions for the salute while reciting the pledge. For decades, children were taught to salute the flag with their arms straight out, with the palm up.

I checked out your link and no one is disputing that Mitt did not serve as President of the organizing committee for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. This is very true and for him to be making the statement, (you can hear for yourself on the video clip,) knowing better that other countries do in fact salute their Anthem, was that much more egregious.

I went to your link and …… oh my, I suddenly was back in school. I grew up in a town very near Toledo, went through the school system and graduated. My father’s family, my grandmother’s family and probably my great grandparents family did this also. My point is that the school system is very Midwestern. (And there as been at least one ancestor in every conflict ever fought by this Country.)

However, I NEVER put my hand over my heart for the National Anthem. This was only done during the Pledge of Allegiance. At high school and college football games I did notice a few people putting their hands on their chests, but the vast majority just sang along with their arms at their sides.

In my original post I seem to remember that the incorrect statement along with the picture I saw said the Pledge was being said, while in actuality, the Anthem was being sung. If I had been there, my hands would be at my side during the National Anthem. I suspect placing the hand over the heart during the song has become more popular recently.

P.S. If you google the phrase “romney national anthem”, you’ll get a ton of reliable sources.

  10. J.O.B. Says:

EOK- I am so confused right now. I reread some stuff. I can only assume that you got confused by my first comment, then proceeded to confuse me with your comment.

“The answer to your question, is that it was a lie, and not Romney being an idiot.” I believe this part of my comment confused you.

“Is the man really this dumb or does he just have no shame? Help me out her folks.” This is the last sentence of your first paragraph, and I was trying to help you with it.

I’ll try again. Since Mitt was involved in an event that involved people from other countries, placing their hands over their hearts during their countries anthem. To answer your question, Mitt is not dumb, he is a liar, or, has no shame.

    Hope this clears things up.

    Hello J.O.B.
Now were on the right track again. 🙂 As I have stated before, I like you and I know we can talk.

I would not go as far as saying a “LIE” but more to the aspect of spouting any political crap that whips up cheering crowds as the reward for spinning this type of statements. Like the old political saying goes, “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with Bull Shit!!” I’m sure those in the crowd didn’t know the difference at the time.

Thanks for the reply and look forward to you coming back soon. As a matter of fact, give me your thoughts on my latest post. Again there is no right or wrong as they are your thoughts.

  12. Engineer of Knowledge Says:

    Hello NON,
Thanks for the visit. I should pass on that my sir name came from Scotland at the time of the Revolutionary War and fought under General “Mad” Anthony Wayne. I would say that as far as my sir name, I guess the war of 1812 was the only one missed out on. But if you extend to the maternal side aspect I know we have been in every U.S. war too.

With my time in the Navy and being in other countries, I learned to cover my heart for not only raising the flag but the National Anthem too. Today I just would not feel right if I did not.

  13. J.O.B. Says:

One more thing. If you are going to accidentally misrepresent a comment that I make. Please do so on a blog, where I am allowed to defend myself. Thanks brother.

I think it will be a better venue for you and me as I would really like to speak with you on a personal level. It will be just you and me plus I promos it is all good. I won’t have to be so guarded with my thoughts.

    Most Sincerely,

  15. J.O.B. Says:

I sent you an e-mail brother
